Dear Sirs,

I have read the newspaper reports on your efforts and had even the pleasure of catching a glimpse at your recent publication on the Cantonese language. I would like to express to you my support for your most worthy endeavors. I share your views that Prof Ho's "correct" pronunciation program is misguided and also a nuisance to the society.

My support is offered to you not only as a member of the concerned public, but also as a professional researcher (PhD in linguistics, Rutgers Univ, USA), who has devoted considerable research to Chinese languages. I was Assistant Professor at the Department of Chinese Studies at the National University of Singapore and am now at the Department of English Language and Literature of the Hong Kong Baptist University. Whatever I have come to understand of languages as a theoretician do not support Prof Ho's prescriptive measures to the Cantonese-speaking world.

With admiration and best wishes,

L.H. Wee (Dr )
